Day Three of the 10 Days of Awe: Milestones of your Truth

Day Three Question:

Think about a major milestone that happened with your family this past year. How has this affected you?

It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
(excerpt from The Journey by Mary Oliver)

A wise friend handed this poem to me as I was making the leap from 28 years of non- profit work to self-employment.

That’s a major milestone, right?

Interestingly enough, as I pondered today’s question I realized that my major milestone this year (and no I won’t tell you) was not starting a counseling practice with two good friends. In reality, my major milestone would appear to be a mere trail marker along the way.  But for me it was a welcomed sight on my own healing journey.

What about your major milestone?.  A health goal reached?  An item crossed off your bucket list?  The last day of chemo?  The end of a difficult relationship? Or, perhaps it’s a blossoming thought; shedding a peephole of light on the hope of well being.

Whatever it is, big or tiny, ponder the impact this milestone has made upon you.
